Microsoft has finally released an official Hotmail application into the Android Market. With the push on Microsoft’s own mobile OS and now Windows 8, an Android application might actually be seen as a capitulation on Microsoft’s part, a me-too app of sorts.
As applications go, there’s nothing fancy about Hotmail when it installs. The setup is simple, and it does seem to have some decent settings available that other email applications don’t (Application Lock, for instance, is something good to see in an email app). Being able to choose any or all types of notifications (vibrate, ring or notification) is a nice touch, as well.
Curiously (and quite pleasantly) You can customize where you save attachments from inside the application in the options; forward thinking of Microsoft’s part, and an odd throwback to conventional email options in Windows. There’s a very cool feature called Quiet Time, which tells Hotmail to wait for a manual “check now” when it’s night time, weekend, you have low power, when you’re roaming, or all of the above.
